Gryphon hockey women nipped by division leaders

GUELPH – A game after winning in a shootout at home, the Guelph Gryphons were edged in a shootout in OUA women’s hockey play Friday night at the Gryphon Centre.

Carley Olivier’s goal in the shootout gave the Waterloo Warriors a 2-1 victory.

The win was Waterloo’s ninth in as many league outings this season while the game was the fifth consecutive one-goal game for the Gryphs. They’ve won two and lost three.

All the scoring during regulation time came during a three-minute stretch of the second period.

Leah Herrfort put Waterloo ahead with a shorthanded goal at 6:42 of the middle frame.

Chihiro Suzuki pulled the Gryphs even at 9:37.

Jaime Magoffin and Tori Verbeek had the assists for the Gryphs while Brooklyn Cole had an assist for Waterloo.

Waterloo outshot the Gryphs 23-21 and neither team had a power-play goal. Guelph had five power plays and the Warriors had seven.

Martina Fedel had 22 saves for the Gryphs while Mikayla Schnarr had nine saves in the first period for Waterloo, but was stung by one of the shots and eventually replaced at the start of the second by Kara Mark who made 11 saves the rest of the way.

The Gryphs are third in the West Division at 5-2-1-2 and 17 points. Waterloo leads at 9-0-0-0 and 24 points while the Windsor Lancers are second at 6-2-1-0 and 18 points.

The Gryphs and Windsor are to meet twice at Windsor’s Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex next week as they’re to meet there next Friday and Saturday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. both days.
