Gryphon hockey women nipped by Nipissing in OT
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a 2-1 loss in overtime to the Nipissing Lakers in OUA women’s hockey league play Sunday at the Gryphon Centre.
The loss put an end to Guelph’s winning streak of five games.
The scoring in regulation time was limited to a goal for each team in the first five and a half minutes of the second period.
After that there was no scoring until Zosia Davis connected for Nipissing seven seconds into the extra period.
Davis had scored the regulation-time goal for the Lakers while Katelyn Heppner and Jetta Derenoski each had one assist.
Lauren Ianni hit for a power-play goal for the Gryphs 54 seconds into the second period with Davis off serving a minor for tripping. Assists on the goal went to Gabrielle Smyth and Kaitlin Lowy.
Guelph outshot Nipissing 28-22 and went 1-for-3 on its power play. Nipissing was scoreless on its lone power play.
Valerie Lamenta was charged with the OT loss in net for the Gryphs while Danika Ranger had the OT win for Nipissing.
The Gryphs (5-1-1-1) and Queen’s Gaels (6-3-0-0) are tied for the league lead while Nipissing is fifth at 2-3-4-0.
Next up for the Gryphs is a home match against the Ryerson Rams (4-2-2-0) Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
