Gryphon hockey women nipped in overtime

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered a goal in the opening minute of overtime to suffer a 4-3 loss to the Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s hockey play Friday night at Kingston’s Memorial Centre.

After a scoreless first period, Queen’s shot ahead with two goals in the second. The Gryphs came back in the third with Lauren Ianni’s goal with 1:30 to go in regulation time tying the score 3-3.

Miranda Lantz and Gabriele Underwood scored the other goals for Guelph while Mayla Mayer, Karli Shell, Sophie Rodenburg and Kristen Jay each getting an assist.

Hailey Wilson hit for the winner for Queen’s 47 seconds into overtime. Kaylie Dennis had scored twice and Hannah De Coutere once in regulation time for the Gaels while Alex Maw, Quinn Johnston, Wilson and Dennis each had one assist.

Both teams went 1-for-3 on their power plays and the Gryphs outshot Queen’s 29-23.

Aurore Beaulieu took the loss in net for Guelph while Makenzy Arsenault had the win for Queen’s.

The result leaves Guelph at 5-2-0-2 and Queen’s at 3-3-3-0.

The Gryphs are to play the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (0-9-0-0) at Oshawa Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
