Gryphon hockey women out after loss to Toronto

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons saw their OUA women’s hockey season come to an end Sunday when they were blanked 4-0 by the Toronto Varsity Blues in the third and final game of their best-of-three semifinal at Varsity Arena.

The win gave the Varsity Blues a berth in the league’s McCaw Cup championship game against the Nipissing Lakers and also a spot in the U Sports national championship tournament at Montreal later in the month.

Sunday, Toronto scored once in the first period and twice in 1:12 midway through the second for the win.

Taylor Trussler recorded a hat trick for the Varsity Blues while Lauren MacDonnell scored the other goal. Sophie Grawbarger assisted on two of the goals while Natasha Athanasakos, Katy McKenna, Aili McKeown, Olivia Hilton and Emma Potter each had one assist.

The Varsity Blues outshot the Gryphs 26-12 with Guelph being held to five shots or fewer in each period.

Erica Fryer stopped all 12 shots for the shutout while Martina Fedel had 22 saves.

The Varsity Blues are to host Nipissing in the McCaw Cup final Saturday at 7 p.m. at Varsity Arena.

Both advance to the national tournament at Montreal March 16 to 19.

Including the preseason, regular season and playoffs the Gryphons finish their campaign with an overall mark of 20-8-4-7.

Forward Abby Davies (7 goals, 8 assists) is the lone Gryph who has used up all five of her years of eligibility. No other member of the team has played more than three seasons with the team.
