Gryphon hockey women overpower Brock
ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons struck for three power-play goals as they dropped the Brock Badgers 6-1 in OUA women’s hockey play Thursday night at the Seymour-Hannah arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Gryphs scored those three power-play markers in the first seven minutes of the second. Brock scored its goal late in the second and the Gryphs added three more goals in the final three minutes of the game, two into an empty net and the other one while playing shorthanded.
Kaitlin Lowy finished with a hat trick for Guelph while Katie Mikkelsen, Kristen Jay and Miranda Lantz also scored. Karli Shell assisted on two of the goals while single assists were awarded to Claire Merrick, Laura Crowdis and Lowy.
Amanda Ieradi scored Brock’s goal while Brena Murphy and Rebekah Feld assisted on the play.
The Gryphs outshot Brock 36-24 and went 3-for-5 on their power play while holding the Badgers scoreless on two power plays.
Aurore Beaulieu stopped 23 shots to get the win in the Guelph net while Jensen Murphy took the loss for Brock.
The game was the final league match of 2018 for the Gryphs. The win left them at 7-2-1-1 and in a three-way tie for first with the Nipissing Lakers (5-3-4-1) and Queen’s Gaels (8-5-0-0). The Gryphs have two games in hand on both Nipissing and Queen’s.
The Gryphs are to return to league play Jan. 4 with a 3:30 p.m. game against the UOIT Ridgebacks (6-6-0-1) at Oshawa.
