Gryphon hockey women secure their first-place finish
NORTH BAY – Two goals in the third period helped the Guelph Gryphons clinch a first-place finish in the OUA women’s hockey league Friday night as they doubled the Nipissing Lakers 4-2 at North Bay Memorial Gardens.
All six goals were scored at the same end of the rink as the Gryphs had tallied twice in the first period and Nipissing tied it with two power-play goals in the second.
Kristen Jay scored twice for Guelph while Stephanie Gava and Katie Mikkelsen scored once apiece. Mikkelsen also had two assists and Miranda Lantz, Jay, Kaitlin Lowy and Gabrielle Smyth had one each.
Hunter Mosher and Jetta Derenoski tallied for Nipissing while assists went to Madison Solie, Brianna Gaffney, Zosia Davis and Katelyn Heppner.
Nipissing outshot the Gryphs 32-25 and scored on both of its power plays while holding the Gryphs scoreless on three power plays.
Valerie Lamenta was credited with 29 saves in the win and Nipissing netminder Mercedes Chircop had 21 saves in the loss.
The win lifts Guelph’s record to 16-2-1-3 with two games to go and secures their fourth first-place finish in six years. Western Mustangs are second at 13-4-1-4 while Nipissing is fifth at 9-7-5-2.
