Gryphon hockey women shut out Laurentian

GUELPH – Aurore Beaulieu stopped all 15 shots sent her way to pick up the shutout as the Guelph Gryphons blanked the Laurentian Voyageurs 2-0 in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.

Mallory Young opened the scoring at 17:58 of the first period and captain Kaitlin Lowy closed it at 2:50 of the third. Assists were recorded by Miranda Lantz, Chantal Gudbranson and Kristen Jay.

Karen Collins stopped the other 29 shots she faced in the Laurentian net.

The Gryphs went scoreless on five power plays while Laurentian was scoreless on three.

With the win, Guelph climbs into a tie for fifth with the Brock Badgers and Toronto Varsity Blues. Brock has a 3-1-2-1 record while both Guelph and Toronto are at 4-0-3-0. Laurentian (2-0-3-1) is tied for 10th in the 13-team league with the York Lions (2-0-5-1).

The Gryphs are to host the Nipissing Lakers (3-0-2-1) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre in a rematch of last season’s McCaw Cup final that the Gryphs won 6-1.
