Gryphon hockey women skate to win over Queen’s

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons scored twice in each of the first two periods to skate to a 5-1 win over the Queen’s Gaels Friday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.

The win was the first of the OUA women’s hockey league’s regular season for the Gryphs.

The Gryphs led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 4-1 after the second.

Tiana Faccio, Avery Peer, Brielle Caruso, Vanessa Burti and Jaime Magoffin struck for a goal apiece for Guelph while Meaghan Chittick, Mayla Mayer, Magoffin, Hannah Tait and Alexie Olivier each had an assist.

Alyson Reeves scored for Queen’s with help from Alexandra Maw.

Queen’s outshot the Gryphs 37-36 including thanks to a 19-9 advantage in the third period.

Martina Fedel picked up the win in the Guelph net with 35 saves while Lexi Giorgi had 36 saves for Queen’s.

Both teams were scoreless on their power plays. The Gryphs had six power plays and the Gaels had five.

The result leaves the Gryphs fourth in the West Division at 1-1-1-0 and Queen’s sixth in the East at 1-2-0-0.

The Gryphs are to play the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (2-1-0-0) at Oshawa Saturday at 3 p.m.
