Gryphon hockey women slip by Laurier in overtime
GUELPH – Sophie Rodenburg’s goal in overtime gave the Guelph Gryphons a 2-1 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA women’s hockey play Wednesday night at the Gryphon Centre.
All of the goals in regulation time came in the first period with Laurier scoring early in the period and Guelph pulling even late in the frame.
Gabriele Underwood scored the regulation-time goal for the Gryphs while assists in the game went to Avery Peer, Maya Graham, Stephanie Gava and Lauren Ianni.
Jaden Head tallied for Laurier at 2:46 of the opening period while Jamie Watson drew an assist on the goal.
The Gryphs outshot the Golden Hawks 28-18 and both teams went 0-for-3 on their power plays.
Alexandrea Davidson stopped 17 shots for the win in the Guelph net while Cohen Myers had 26 saves for Laurier.
The win lifts the Gryphs to seventh in the standings at 5-4-1-2 while Laurier is 11th at 1-7-1-3.
The game was the final home game of 2019 for the Gryphs. They’re to play the Windsor Lancers (2-8-0-1) at Windsor’s Capri Ice Centre Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to wrap up their pre-exams schedule.
The Gryphs are to start the 2020 portion of their schedule with four consecutive home games as they’re to host the Toronto Varsity Blues (8-3-0-0) Jan. 5, Queen’s Gaels (7-4-1-0) Jan. 11, Windsor Jan. 18 and York Lions (7-4-0-1) Jan. 22.
