Gryphon hockey women slow out of gate in loss to Waterloo
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons yielded a pair of goals to Brooklyn Cole in the first four minutes of the game and couldn’t recover as they were edged 3-2 by the Waterloo Warriors in their OUA women’s hockey league home opener Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre.
Waterloo led 2-0 at the end of the first period before Cynthia Cavanagh of the Warriors scored the only goal of the second, a shorthanded marker.
The Gryphs attempted a comeback in the third as Kaitlin Lowy and Kristen Jay scored just under four minutes apart before the period was nine minutes old, but that was as close as the hosts were to get.
Gabrielle Smyth picked up an assist for the Gryphs.
Trisha Cho had two assists for Waterloo while Dollee Meigs and Emma Cheeseman had one apiece.
Amanda Smith made 29 saves in the Waterloo net for the win while Valerie Lamenta made 22 saves and was tagged with the loss.
The Gryphs were scoreless on four power plays while Waterloo went 1-for-4 on its power play.
The loss leaves Guelph at 0-1-1-0 and Waterloo improves to 1-0-1-0 with the win.
Next up for the Gryphs is a game against the Ryerson Rams (2-1-0-0) Thursday at Toronto’s Mattamy Athletics Centre. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
