Gryphon hockey women stretch winning streak

LONDON – A goal by Kelly Gribbons 30 seconds into overtime lifted the Guelph Gryphons to a 4-3 victory over the Western Mustangs Thursday night at Thompson arena.

The goal extended Guelph’s winning streak to five games and allowed the Gryphs to win a game that they led by three goals with six minutes to go in regulation time.

Western’s late comeback included a pair of goals scored with the goaltender pulled in favour of an extra skater in the final minute and a half.

The Gryphs scored twice in the first period and once in the second before the Mustangs battled back to force overtime.

Gribbons finished with two goals and two assists for the Gryphs while Katherine Bailey and Katie Mikkelsen also scored. Ashlee Lawrence had three assists while Claire Merrick had two and Bailey had one.

April Clark netted a pair of goals for Western while Alyssa Chiarello also scored. Amanda Pereira and Anthea Lasis each had two assists while Emma Pearson and Evra Levesque had one each.

Western outshot the Gryphs 35-28. Aurore Beaulieu picked up the win in net for the Gryphs while Carmen Lasis started in net for Western and was replaced after the first period by Tareya Webster.

Both teams were 0-for-3 on their power plays.

The win allows the Gryphs to jump over the Mustangs and into second place in the 13-team league. The Gryphs are at 5-1-3-0 while Western’s at 4-1-2-2.

The Gryphs are to play the fourth-place Brock Badgers (4-1-2-1) Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at the Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines.
