Gryphon hockey women stung by Concordia
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons yielded a pair of goals four minutes apart in the third period as they were handed a 5-3 setback by the Concordia Stingers in U Sports women’s hockey preseason play Saturday at the Gryphon Centre.
Concordia scored the only goal of the first period and led 3-1 after the second before the Gryphs battled back to tie it with two goals in the first three and a half minutes of the third. Less than a minute later the Stingers broke the tie.
Miranda Lantz, Kaitlin Lowy and Mallory Young scored the goals for Guelph while assists went to Young, Maddy Melo and Emma Forcey.
Audrey Belzile had a hat trick for Concordia while Marie-Pascale Bernier and Sandrine Lavictoire also scored. Stephanie Lemelin, Alex Nikolikakis, Audrey-Ann Rodrigue, Rosalie Begin-Cyr and Stephanie Lalancette collected one assist apiece.
Concordia outshot the Gryphs 28-16. Valerie Lamenta was in net for Guelph while Alice Philbert picked up the win in the Concordia net.
The loss was the second in as many preseason outings for the Gryphs while the win was Concordia’s second in two preseason matches.
Next game for the Gryphs is a match against NCAA squad Quinnipiac Bobcats at Hamden, Conn., Saturday afternoon.
