Gryphon hockey women sunk by power-play goal in OT

LONDON – The Western Mustangs hit for the winning goal on a power play with 1:12 left in overtime to edge the Guelph Gryphons 3-2 in OUA women’s hockey league play Saturday at Western’s Thompson Arena.

The Gryphs never trailed in regulation time, but never led by more than a goal.

The teams were deadlocked 1-1 at the end of the first period and 2-2 after the second before a scoreless third.

Kristen Jay and Karli Shell scored the goals for Guelph while assists went to Stephanie Gava and Claire Merrick.

Evra Levesque scored the OT winner for Western while Rachel Armstrong and April Clark scored in regulation time. Assists were awarded to Clark, Levesque, Beatrice Arsenault Dufour, Sydnee Baker and Brooke Dicicco.

The teams took 35 shots apiece in the chippy game. Western went 2-for-6 on its power play and the Gryphs went 1-for-9.

Valerie Lamenta was tagged with the loss in net for the Gryphs. She had 32 saves while winning goalie Carmen Lasis of Western had 33 saves.

The Gryphs lead the league at 14-2-1-3 while Western is second at 12-4-1-4. Guelph has gone 11 games without a loss in regulation time and are 9-0-1-1 in that stretch.

Saturday’s game was the first of four consecutive road games for the Gryphs. They’re to play the Windsor Lancers (0-17-2-2) at Windsor’s Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex Sunday at 2 p.m., Nipissing Lakers (9-6-5-2) at North Bay’s Memorial Gardens Friday at 7:30 p.m., Laurentian Voyageurs (6-11-1-3) at Sudbury’s Countryside Arena Saturday at 4 p.m. and Toronto Varsity Blues (11-6-2-2) at the Gryphon Centre Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.
