Gryphon hockey women surprised in OT by OT Ridgebacks
OSHAWA – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their second OUA women’s hockey league loss in overtime in as many days as they were edged 5-4 by the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks Saturday at the Ontario Tech Campus Ice Centre.
The Gryphs had been edged 4-3 in overtime by the Queen’s Gaels at Kingston Friday.
The win gave Ontario Tech its first points of the season as the Ridgebacks had dropped their previous nine league outings.
While the Gryphs have lost three of their past seven games, none of the losses have come in regulation time as they were also edged in a shootout by the Toronto Varsity Blues at Toronto Nov. 1. The Gryphs haven’t lost in regulation time since their 5-3 setback to the Western Mustangs in their Fall Faceoff match at the Sleeman Centre Oct. 24.
Saturday, Ontario Tech scored the first two goals of the game and led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 4-3 after the second. The Gryphs tied it early in the third, but Natalie Wozney’s unassisted goal a minute and a half into overtime won it for the Ridgebacks.
Sydney Davison had a pair of goals for the Gryphs while Sophie Rodenburg and Karli Shell also scored. Hannah Tait picked up two assists and Rodenburg, Maya Graham, Kristen Jay, Nicole MacKinnon and Mayla Mayer each had one.
The winning goal was Wozney’s second goal of the game and it capped off her huge performance as she also assisted on each of the other three goals. Those goals were scored by Marissa Murphy, Nicole Zabel and Katie Heath while Megan Johnston also had three assists and Heath had two.
The Gryphs outshot the Ridgebacks 33-23, but were scoreless on three power plays while Ontario Tech was 2-for-4 on its power play.
Kathryn Raymond was tagged with the overtime loss in the Guelph net. She had 18 saves while winning netminder Celine Tessier had 29 for Ontario Tech.
The Gryphs are tied for fifth in the league standings with the Waterloo Warriors, Western and Queen’s. Guelph has a 5-3-0-2 while Waterloo and Western have identical 5-3-1-0 records and Queen’s is at 5-4-1-0.
The Gryphs are to host the Brock Badgers (3-6-0-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
