Gryphon hockey women win with a single goal

TORONTO – A single goal was all the Guelph Gryphons needed to slip by the Toronto Varsity Blues in OUA women’s hockey play Saturday night at Toronto’s Varsity Arena.

Tori Verbeek put an end to a scoreless game with her goal for the Gryphs at 7:36 of the third period. Jaime Magoffin and Brielle Caruso assisted on the goal.

Martina Fedel stopped all 15 shots she faced to get the shutout in the tight-checking match. Erica Fryer had 13 saves for Toronto.

The win put an end to a three-game losing streak against the Varsity Blues, although two of those losses came in overtime.

The victory was also the fourth consecutive road triumph for the Gryphs.

The Gryphs are third in the OUA West at 4-2-1-1 and 14 points.

In OUA women’s hockey, teams get three points for a win in regulation time, two for a win in either overtime or a shootout and one for a loss in either overtime or a shootout.

Waterloo Warriors (8-0-0-0) lead with 22 points and are followed by the Windsor Lancers (5-2-1-0) with 15 points, the Gryphs, Western Mustangs (3-4-1-0) with 10 points, Brock Badgers (3-4-1-0) with eight points and Laurier Golden Hawks (0-7-1-0) with one point.

The Varsity Blues (5-2-0-0) are second in the OUA East with 15 points.

The Gryphs have a pair of home games on their schedule this week as they’re to host Brock Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Waterloo Friday at 7:30 p.m. Both games are to be played at the Gryphon Centre.
