Gryphon hoops men finish preseason with victory
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons came back from a single-point deficit with five and a half minutes to go in the game to complete their OUA men’s basketball preseason with a 76-72 victory over the Mount Royal Cougars Thursday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The Gryphs led 29-18 at the end of the first quarter, 41-34 at halftime and 61-51 after the third quarter before the Cougars rallied in the final quarter to go up 67-66 with 5:29 to play.
After a scoreless stretch of almost two minutes, the Gryphs shot ahead for good as Khalid Ismail dropped in a layup and then Viktoras Nausedas hit a jumper about a minute after that to put the hosts ahead by three.
In the end, four free throws by Keenan Dowell with a second to go provided the winning margin as Mount Royal’s Keivonte Watts hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Nausedas led the Gryphs with 17 points while Dowell added 15 and Felix Janusauskas had 12. Nausedas also had nine rebounds and three steals while Dowell had four steals and Ismail had three steals.
Watts had 18 points to lead Mount Royal while Scott Duncan had 17 and Holt Tomie added 13. Tomie had nine rebounds while Watts had three steals.
The Gryphs shot 44 percent on field goals, 36 percent on three-pointers and 90 percent on free throws and also scored 16 points in the paint, 19 off turnovers, 12 on second chances and 24 from the bench.
The Cougars shot 53 percent on field goals, 25 percent on three-pointers and 63 percent on free throws and also scored 12 points in the paint, 21 off turnovers, six on second chances and 16 from the bench.
The Gryphs finish their preseason with a 3-1 record. They’re to open their regular season Nov. 4 with a game in Thunder Bay against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
