Gryphon hoops men ahead early, but fall to UBC
CALGARY – The Guelph Gryphons squandered a fast start as they fell 96-90 to the British Columbia Thunderbirds in Calgary Cup university men’s preseason basketball play Friday.
The Gryphs had led 30-20 at the end of the first quarter and 48-37 at halftime before UBC came back in the second half. The Thunderbirds and Gryphs were tied 70-70 at the end of the third quarter. However, UBC had a seven-point lead three minutes later and the Gryphs never caught up the rest of the way.
Malcolm Glanville again led the Gryphs with 23 points while Tommy Yanchus followed with 21, Keenan Dowell netted 14 and Rasheed Weekes had 10. Dowell and Viktor Nausedas each had 10 rebounds.
Mason Bourcier struck for 30 points for UBC while Jadon Cohee had 16, Jack Cruz-Dumont had 12 and Grant Shephard had 11. Bourcier and Shephard each had seven rebounds and Jonah Morrison had two steals.
The Gryphs are to wrap up their play in the tournament with a game against the host Calgary Dinos Saturday at 10 p.m. The Dinos defeated the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 99-90 Friday.
