Gryphon hoops men claim third straight win

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Five players hit double digits in scoring as the Guelph Gryphons defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 89-76 for their third consecutive win in OUA men’s basketball play Saturday.

The Gryphs had to come up big in the third quarter for the second win over Algoma at Algoma’s George Leach Centre in as many days.

Algoma led 20-19 at the end of the first quarter before the Gryphs inched ahead 41-40 by halftime. Guelph stretched the lead to 68-54 by the end of the third quarter.

Keenan Dowell struck for 26 points for the Gryphs while Emmanuel Ansah had 19, Khalid Ismail had 12, Felix Janusauskas had 11 and Carl Veltmann had 10. Ansah grabbed eight rebounds while Ismail had seven assists, Ansah and Viktor Nausedas each had a block and Dowell, Nausedas and Dezayne Mingo each had a steal.

The Gryphs shot 43 percent on field goals, 38 percent on three-pointers and 88 percent on free throws. The Gryphs also scored 32 points in the paint, 19 off turnovers, 21 on second chances and 36 from the bench.

Devin Miron scored 18 points for Algoma while Taleh Wade had 16 and Johan Germain and Riley Rathwell each had 14. Shawn Cher-Enfant hauled down 12 rebounds while Miron and Germain each had three assists and Peter De La Paz had two steals.

The Thunderbirds shot 43 percent on field goals, 44 percent on three-pointers and 67 percent on free throws. Algoma also scored 32 points in the paint, 16 off turnovers, 12 on second chances and 24 from the bench.

The Gryphs are 3-3 in league play while Algoma is 0-8.

The Gryphs are to play a pair of games next week before the break for exams and Christmas. They’re to host the McMaster Marauders (3-5) Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre and play the Western Mustangs (4-4) Saturday at 8 p.m. at Western’s Alumni Hall.
