Gryphon hoops men come back for victory

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons rallied in the fourth quarter to topple the McMaster Marauders 83-80 in OUA men’s basketball play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs trailed 67-59 at the end of the third quarter before coming back for the win. The teams had been tied at 22 at the end of the opening quarter and the Gryphs led 36-34 at halftime. A 25-9 run by the Marauders in the third quarter put them ahead 61-48 with two and a half minutes to go in the quarter.

The fourth-quarter comeback by the Gryphs started in the quarter’s opening minute as Rasheed Weekes hit a free throw to begin a run of 13 consecutive points to put the hosts ahead with five minutes to go in the quarter.

Daniel Dooley connected for 16 points to lead the Gryphs while Weekes had 15, Tommy Yanchus 14, Taylor Boers 13 and Drew Walford nine. Banky Alade, Weekes and Kieran Naus each had six rebounds while Dooley had five assists and two steals and Shawn Carey had two blocks.

Miles Seward scored 21 points for McMaster and David McCulloch had 20 and Danylo Kostecki had 11. Kareem Collins grabbed 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals and Andre Toic had nine rebounds.

The result leaves the Gryphs, McMaster and Algoma Thunderbirds tied for the sixth and final playoff position in the West Division with identical 4-14 records.

The Gryphs are to host Algoma twice on the weekend as they’re to play at 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
