Gryphon hoops men come back to stop Laurier

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons put an end to their four-game losing skid as they toppled the Laurier Golden Hawks 82-68 in OUA men’s basketball play Wednesday night at Laurier.

The Gryphs had to come from behind to record the victory as they trailed 26-17 at the end of the first quarter, but were up 43-42 at halftime. The locals added a little to their lead in the third quarter as they extended it to 60-56 by the end of the quarter.

The locals started a 20-4 run late in the third quarter that put them ahead by 12 points with a little less than five and a half minutes to go in the game.

Keenan Dowell had 20 points for the Gryphs while Rasheed Weekes had 17 and Tommy Yanchus had 15 in his return to the lineup after clearing the concussion protocol. J.L. Nwosu and Trevor Hutton each had 11. Weekes had 11 rebounds while Malcolm Glanville and Kieran Naus each had four assists.

Kemel Archer had a game-high 24 points for Laurier while Romello Taylor had 10. Archer also had 15 rebounds while Taylor had five assists.

Guelph is fourth in the West Division at 2-5 while Laurier (4-5) and the Windsor Lancers (4-4) are tied for second.

The Gryphs are to host the Waterloo Warriors (1-7) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre Saturday at 3 p.m.
