Gryphon hoops men downed by Golden Hawks

GUELPH – An 81-75 loss to the ninth-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks in the final game of the OUA men’s basketball season for both teams at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre Saturday proved costly for the Gryphs.

The loss combined with an 88-87 victory by the McMaster Marauders over the Western Mustangs Saturday cost the Gryphons a home playoff match against the Marauders. Instead, the two will hook up in their West Division quarter-final game Wednesday night at McMaster.

Both teams finished the regular season with 11-13 records, but McMaster won the tie-breaker by virtue of their 97-80 win at the GGAC Jan. 11. Guelph beat the Marauders at McMaster Wednesday, but it was by two points.

Saturday, the Gryphs got off to a quick start and led 21-16 at the end of the opening quarter, but they couldn’t hold on to the lead. Laurier was ahead 48-44 at halftime and 62-59 at the end of the third quarter, despite the highlight of the game by Guelph’s Kieran Naus who hit a three-point buzzer-beater from just outside the arc – in his own end.

The Gryphs got the gap down to two points a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but just couldn’t pull even.

Tommy Yanchus led the Gryphs with 18 points while Rasheed Weekes had 16, Banky Alade 15 and Malcolm Glanville 10. Alade had 17 rebounds to finish with a league-best 11.1 per game. Glanville had six assists.

Ali Sow connected for 24 points for Laurier and Ntore Habimana had 19 and Kemel Archer collected 10. Matt Minutillo had five rebounds while Sow and Jackson Mayers each had five assists and Ben Stevens had four blocks.

Wednesday’s playoff game at McMaster is to start at 7 p.m.
