Gryphon hoops men downed by Indiana Wesleyan

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons fell behind by 12 points in the opening quarter and never caught up as they were handed a 103-90 setback by the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats in OUA preseason men’s basketball play Saturday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

The Gryphs did manage to get the gap down to two points (64-62) with four minutes to go in the third quarter, but their NAIA opponent from Marion, Ind., pulled away after that.

Keenan Dowell hit for 23 points to lead the Gryphon scoring while Viktor Nausedas had 22, Rasheed Weekes 13 and Tommy Yanchus 10. Kieran Naus hauled down six rebounds while Dowell had three assists and Weekes had two blocks.

Kyle Mangas connected for 28 points for Indiana Wesleyan while Seth Maxwell had 27 and Canaan Coffey collected 15. Mangas also had 10 rebounds and four assists, Maxwell had three blocks and Noah Smith had four steals.

The Gryphs complete their preseason scheduled with four wins and three losses.

They’re to start their regular season Nov. 1 with a 1 p.m. game against the Queen’s Gaels at Kingston. They’ll host the York Lions at the GGAC in their home opener Nov. 2. Game time is 8 p.m.
