Gryphon hoops men drop Algoma for second win

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons jumped ahead early and held on for a 90-73 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in OUA men’s basketball play Friday night at Algoma’s George Leach Centre.

The Gryphs stretched a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter into a 12-point advantage at halftime.

Guelph held quarter leads of 23-20, 47-35 and 74-52.

Keenan Dowell and Viktor Nausedas each had 14 points for the Gryphs while Emmanuel Ansah had 12 and Khalid Ismail and Carl Veltmann each netted 10.

Rasheed Weekes and Jalen Mason each had six rebounds for the Gryphs while Dowell and Mason each had six assists. Mason also had two blocks while Dowell and Nausedas each had two steals.

The Gryphs shot 51 percent on field goals, 35 percent on three-pointers and 74 percent on free throws. They also had 38 points in the paint, 15 off turnovers, 14 on second chances and 41 from the bench.

Taleh Wade and Johan Germain each had 17 points for Algoma while Adrian Deere had 12. Devin Miron had eight rebounds and four assists while he and JoelKing Ongagna each had a block. Germain and Ongagna each had two steals.

The Thunderbirds shot 37 percent on field goals, 35 percent on three-pointers and 94 percent on free throws. They also had 20 points in the paint, 15 off turnovers, six on second chances and 26 from the bench.

The Gryphs are 2-3 in league play while the Thunderbirds are 0-7.

The teams are to play again Saturday at 4 p.m. in Sault Ste. Marie.
