Gryphon hoops men drop season opener to Queen’s
KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons fell behind early, almost caught up and then saw the Queen’s Gaels pull away as they dropped their OUA men’s basketball season opener 88-70 to the Gaels Friday at the Queen’s ARC Gymnasium.
The Gryphs led once during the game when Rasheed Wallace hit a jumper two and a half minutes into the game to put the Gryphs up 4-2. Queen’s responded by running to a 25-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. Guelph cut the gap back to seven points (40-33) at halftime and tied it at 53 with 2:20 to go in the third quarter. However, the Gaels were ahead 60-56 at the end of the third and didn’t allow the Gryphs to get any closer in the final quarter.
The Gryphs hit 19 of their 29 free throws while the Gaels were 13-of-21. Queen’s hauled down 45 rebounds, 11 more than the Gryphs and the hosts had 15 points off turnovers, three more than Guelph.
Malcolm Glanville finished the game with 23 points for the Gryphs while Weekes had 14 and Tommy Yanchus netted 12. Glanville and Yanchus each had six rebounds while Weekes had three steals and two blocks.
Quinton Gray struck for 21 points for Queen’s while Luka Syllas had 19, Harry Range 12 and Henry Van Herk 11. Cole Syllas grabbed 16 rebounds while Range had eight and the Syllases each had four assists.
While the game was the season opener for the Gryphs, Queen’s improved to 2-1.
As is the case in the women’s league, the OUA men’s league is also operating with three six-team divisions this season. The Gryphs are in the West Division with the Algoma Thunderbirds, Laurier Golden Hawks, Waterloo Warriors, Western Mustangs and Windsor Lancers.
Top three in each division qualify for the playoffs along with the three teams with the best records of the remaining teams. The teams that place first in the division along with the second-place team with the best record will get first-round byes.
The Gryphs are to play their home opener Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre against the York Lions (1-1). Game time is 8 p.m.
