Gryphon hoops men dropped by McGill in UQAM tourney
MONTREAL – The Guelph Gryphons fell behind early and never recovered as they were dropped 95-73 by the McGill Redmen in their final game at the UQAM Olga Hyrcak Classic university men’s basketball tournament Sunday.
McGill led 29-14 at the end of the first quarter thanks to an 18-3 run and the Redmen were up 47-26 at halftime. The teams scored 25 points apiece in the third quarter.
Malcolm Glanville had 14 points for the Gryphs while Trevor Hutton collected 11 and Everest Jaggs added nine. Kieran Naus and Jaggs each had seven rebounds while Aaron Nugent had two assists and Hutton had two steals.
Sam Jenkins had 19 points for McGill as all five starters hit double digits in scoring. Quarry Whyne and Levi Londole had 14 apiece while Cameron Elliot had 11 and Jamal Mayali netted 10. Jenkins had seven rebounds and three steals while Elliot and Mayali each had three assists.
The Redmen shot 53 per cent from the floor in the game while the Gryphs shot 38 per cent. McGill also had a 19-3 advantage in points off turnovers and a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint.
The Gryphs went 1-2 in the UQAM tournament while McGill was 2-1.
The Gryphs, tied for fourth in the West Division at 3-7, return to OUA league play with a pair of road games as they’re to battle the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (sixth in the East at 0-10) at Oshawa Jan. 8 and the Waterloo Warriors (tied for fourth in the West at 3-8) at Waterloo Jan. 11.
