Gryphon hoops men dropped in return to league play

THUNDER BAY – The Guelph Gryphons returned to OUA men’s basketball play Friday night with an 87-81 loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.

The Gryphs never led in the game as Lakehead grabbed a six-point lead in the first two minutes of the game. The hosts led 19-15 at the end of the first quarter, 45-31 at halftime and 66-56 after the third quarter.

The Thunderwolves were aided by a 14-2 run in the second quarter.

The Gryphs shot 43 percent on field goals, 35 percent on three-pointers and 77 percent on free throws and also had 46 points in the paint, nine off turnovers and 10 from their bench.

Lakehead shot 46 percent on field goals, 26 percent on three-pointers and 61 percent on free throws and also had 56 points from the paint, 20 on turnovers and 21 from their bench.

Malcolm Glanville led the Gryphs with 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists while Khalid Ismail had 18 points and five assists. Keenan Dowell added 16 points while Viktor Nausedas had 12.

Michael Okafor had 23 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for Lakehead while Laoui Msambya also had 23 points with four assists. Dylan Morrison had 10 points and nine rebounds while Alston Harris had 10 points and six rebounds.

The teams are to play again Saturday at 8 p.m. at Thunder Bay.
