Gryphon hoops men dumped by Western

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their fourth consecutive loss in OUA men’s basketball play Wednesday as they were dropped 99-80 by the Western Mustangs at Western’s Alumni Hall.

The Gryphs outscored the Mustangs by 11 points in the fourth quarter to close the gap to the final 19-point difference.

After the host Mustangs held a slim 22-20 lead at the end of the first quarter, they took control with a pair of 31-17 quarters as they were up 53-37 at halftime and 84-54 at the end of the third quarter.

Jonathan Wallace, the only Guelph starter to score more than six points, led the Gryphs with 18 while Tommy Yanchus had 15 off the bench and was followed by fellow Guelphites Craig Valeriote with nine and Jake Chaput with eight. Drew Walford had six. Walford, Kieran Naus and Rasheed Weekes each had five rebounds while Taylor Boers had two steals.

Eriq Jenkins led Western with 22 points while Marko Kovac had 19, Henry Tan 17 and Omar Shiddo 12. Christopher Clegg grabbed 16 rebounds.

Both teams sank 46 per cent of their shots, but Western took 81 to 65 taken by the Gryphs. The Mustangs also outrebounded Guelph 49-34 and the Gryphs recorded all three blocks registered in the game.

The loss leaves the Gryphs at 3-12 while Western improves to 9-6.

The Gryphs are to host the West Division-leading Brock Badgers (13-2) Friday at 8 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
