Gryphon hoops men edge Algoma in OT

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Malcolm Glanville hit two free throws with two seconds to go in a five-minute overtime period to give the Guelph Gryphons an 87-85 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in OUA men’s basketball play Saturday night at Algoma’s George Leach Centre.

The teams were tied 79-79 at the completion of regulation time and the hosts grabbed a three-point lead in the first minute of the extra period before the Gryphs came back. Glanville hit two layups and the two free throws in OT while Banky Alade also dropped in a layup.

The game was close throughout with Algoma leading 20-16 at the end of the first quarter, 42-41 at halftime and 64-58 at the end of the third quarter.

That the Gryphs won it with free throws was fitting as they scored 10 more points from the line than the Thunderbirds. Guelph went 24-of-37 on free throws while Algoma went 14-of-24.

Alade led the Gryphs with 28 points while Tommy Yanchus had 21, Glanville 13 and Rasheed Weekes 11. Alade grabbed 16 rebounds and Glanville had 11.

Algoma had six players hit double digits in scoring – Jermaine Lyle with 18, Jamari Stephenson with 13, Nick Gehlen with 12 and Elijah Butler, Nathan Riley and David Bokanga with 11 apiece. Butler had 13 rebounds and Riley had 11 along with seven assists.

Guelph is tied for fifth in the West Division with the Lakehead Thunderwolves as both have 8-12 records. The McMaster Marauders are fourth at 9-11 while the Windsor Lancers are seventh at 6-14 and Algoma eighth at 5-15. Top six qualify for the playoffs.

The Gryphs have four games to go in their regular season. They’re to play Windsor at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre Friday at 8 p.m., Waterloo Warriors (3-17) at the GGAC Saturday at 8 p.m., McMaster at Hamilton Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. and the division-leading Laurier Golden Hawks (15-5) at the GGAC Feb. 16 at 3 p.m.
