Gryphon hoops men fade in middle quarters in loss to McMaster

HAMILTON – The middle quarters proved to be the undoing of the Guelph Gryphons in OUA men’s basketball league play Saturday night at McMaster’s Burridge Gymnasium.

The Gryphons were outscored by 19 points in the second and third quarters combined in their 95-75 loss to the McMaster Marauders.

McMaster had held a slim 26-25 lead at the end of the first quarter before the hosts extended it to 52-38 at halftime and 77-57 by the end of the the third quarter.

The Gryphs had held a five-point lead with just under a minute and a half to go in the opening quarter before McMaster responded with an 18-2 run that put the Marauders ahead 38-27 a little over two minutes into the second quarter.

Malcolm Glanville led the Gryphs with 27 points while Keenan Dowell had 14 and Rasheed Weekes added eight. Glanville also had 12 rebounds and Guelph’s only block of the game.

Tristan Lindo and Jordan Henry each had 27 points for McMaster and Connor Gilmore had 16 to go along with 13 rebounds and three assists. Ezichi Kalu had three blocks and Henry had two steals.

The difference in the game came on a combination of McMaster’s three-point shooting and its free-throw shooting. The Marauders sank 11 three-pointers, six more than the Gryphs, and 20 of 24 free throws while the Gryphs were good on six of 14 free throws. That’s 14 more points on foul shots and more than overcame Guelph’s 10-point advantage of points in the paint.

The loss was the second of the weekend for the Gryphs who are tied for fourth in the West Division at 1-3. The Algoma Thunderbirds are at 1-4.

McMaster is second in the Central Division at 4-1 while the Lakehead Thunderwolves lead at 5-1.

Two of the 18 teams in the league remain unbeaten after Saturday’s matches and both are to play the Gryphs at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre next week.

The Gryphs are to battle the Ottawa Gee-Gees (4-0) at the GGAC Friday starting at 8 p.m. and the Carleton Ravens (also 4-0) next Sunday at 8 p.m. Carleton is ranked first in U Sports men’s basketball while Ottawa is ranked third.
