
Gryphon hoops men fall behind in second half of opener
THUNDER BAY – The Guelph Gryphons faded in the second half as they suffered a 91-77 loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves to open their OUA men’s basketball season Friday night at Lakehead’s C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.
The Gryphs trailed 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, but led 43-40 at halftime. However, the host came back to claim a 69-62 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Carl Veltmann led the Gryphs with 16 points while Khalid Ismail and Emmanuel Ansah each had 15 and Viktoras Nausedas had 10. Nausedas also had 12 rebounds while Dezayne Mingo had seven assists in 15 minutes of court time and Ismail and Ansah each had three steals.
Michael Okafor and Nathan Bilamu had 20 points apiece for Lakehead while Alston Harris had 13 and Dylan Morrison and Laoui Msambya each had 11. Morrison had 13 rebounds and two blocks and Msambya had 10 rebounds and six assists.
The Gryphs shot 35 percent on field goals, 17 percent (4 of 23) on three-pointers and 77 percent on free throws and also had 44 points from the paint, 16 points off turnovers, 11 second-chance points and 34 from their bench.
The Thunderwolves shot 45 percent on field goals, 35 percent (4 of 23) on three-pointers and 72 percent on free throws and also had 40 points from the paint, 17 points off turnovers, 15 second-chance points and 26 from their bench.
The Gryphs (0-1) are to host the Laurier Golden Hawks (1-0) in their home opener Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The Golden Hawks defeated the Western Mustangs 89-73 at Western Friday night.
