Gryphon hoops men fall to No. 6 Lakehead

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons got the gap down to five points in the fourth quarter before the Lakehead Thunderwolves pulled away for an 80-66 victory in OUA men’s basketball play Sunday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

The game was close throughout the first half as sixth-ranked Lakehead was up 19-14 after the first quarter and 37-33 at halftime. The Thunderwolves extended the lead to 54-44 by the end of the third quarter.

Aaron Nugent’s three-pointer with 7:23 to go cut the margin to five points (57-52), but the Thunderwolves pulled away after that, starting with eight consecutive points to get comfortable.

The Gryphs had five players in double figures with Nugent and Malcolm Glanville getting 14 apiece, Keenan Dowell adding 12 and Rasheed Weekes and J.L. Nwosu adding 10 each. Weekes had 14 rebounds while Glanville had five assists and Dowell had three steals.

Lock Lam hit for a game-high 29 points for Lakehead while Isaiah had 19 and Laoui Msambya collected 12. Lam had nine rebounds and two blocks while Msambya had six assists and four steals.

The loss drops the Gryphs to 6-7 while Lakehead moves to 10-3.
