
Gryphon hoops men handed third consecutive setback
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons returned from the OUA men’s basketball league’s break for exams and Christmas with an 81-69 loss to the Toronto Metropolitan Bold, formerly Ryerson Rams, at TMU Wednesday.
It was Guelph’s third consecutive loss as they had dropped their two matches immediately before the month-long break.

The Gryphs led 19-15 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 44-34 at halftime and 61-52 after the third quarter. They got the gap down to eight points three minutes into the final quarter, but couldn’t get any closer.
Viktor Nausedas led the Gryphs with 18 points while Dezayne Mingo had 15 and Emmanuel Ansah collected 12. Felix Janusaskas had five rebounds while Mingo had three assists and three steals.
Aaron Rhooms gathered 20 points for TMU while Ankit Choudhary had 18 and Lamar Everd and Guelph native Lincoln Rosebush picked up 10 apiece. Everd also had eight rebounds, six assists and three steals while Rosebush, who’s in his first season with the Bold after transferring to TMU following three seasons with the UBC Thunderbirds.
The Gryphs shot 37 percent on field goals, 10 percent (2 of 21) on three pointers and 79 percent on free throws while also getting 42 points in the paint, 21 off turnovers, six on second chances and 35 from their bench.
TMU shot 44 percent on field goals, 32 percent on three pointers and 73 percent on free throws and also collected 28 points in the paint, 19 off turnovers, nine on second chances and 15 from their bench.
The Gryphs are fourth in the West Division at 3-6. Windsor Lancers lead at 7-2 while the Laurier Golden Hawks are second at 6-4 and Western Mustangs are third at 5-5. The Gryphs are trailed by the Waterloo Warriors at 0-8 and Algoma Thunderbirds at 0-10. TMU is fourth in the Central Division at 6-4.
The Gryphs are to play the Central Division-leading Toronto Varsity Blues (9-2) Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
