Gryphon hoops men hang on to edge Windsor

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons turned in a huge third quarter and then held on to edge the Windsor Lancers 94-93 in OUA men’s basketball play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

Windsor started hot, grabbing a 26-20 lead at the end of the first quarter before the teams scored 21 apiece in the second quarter. The Gryphs shot ahead 50-37 by the end of the third quarter thanks to a run of 16 consecutive points.

The Lancers chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter, getting it down to the final single-point margin with 31 seconds to play. There wasn’t any scoring after that although both teams took a shot, Guelph’s Keenan Dowell missing a jumper with 12 seconds to play and Windsor’s Chris Poloniato missing a three-point attempt with four second to go.

The Gryphs had six players hit double figures in scoring including all five starters. Dowell led with 21 points while Rasheed Weekes had 15, Trevor Hutton had 13 off the bench, Malcolm Glanville had 12 and Kieran Naus and Aaron Nugent each had 11. Nugent grabbed nine rebounds and had nine assists while Naus had five steals.

The Lancers matched the Gryphons’ scoring feat with six players in double digits including all five starters. Jordan Fullerton led the way with 23 points while Shakael Pryce had 20, Poloniato had 13 off the bench, a total matched by Telloy Simon, Thomas Kennedy had 11 and Jake Polski had 10. Kennedy had 19 rebounds while Pryce had 10 assists.

Windsor shot 51 per cent from the floor and 52 per cent on three-pointers in the game while the Gryphs shot 40 per cent from the floor and 43 per cent on three-pointers. However, the Gryphs took more shots than the Lancers – 15 more from the floor and 19 more three-pointers.

The win for the Gryphs puts an end to a two-game losing streak and left them at 6-9. Windsor falls to 8-7.

The Gryphs have a pair of road games next weekend as they’re to play the Nipissing Lakers (4-12) at North Bay Friday at 8 p.m. and the seventh-ranked Laurentian Voyageurs (11-5) at Sudbury Saturday at 8 p.m.
