Gryphon hoops men head into playoffs on winning streak
SAULT STE. MARIE – The Guelph Gryphons will head into the OUA men’s basketball league playoffs on a three-game winning streak after they completed their regular season with a 90-82 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds Saturday night at Algoma’s George Leach Centre.
It was Guelph’s second win over Algoma in as many nights as they had defeated the Thunderbirds 83-72 Friday night. They also downed the Toronto Varsity Blues 91-83 last Sunday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
Saturday, the Gryphs had to come from behind for the win as they trailed 24-19 at the end of the first quarter. However, Guelph was ahead 44-42 at halftime and 74-60 at the end of the third quarter.
Rasheed Weekes collected 21 points for the Gryphs while Malcolm Glanville had 17, Trevor Hutton 16, Keenan Dowell 12 and Banky Alade 11. Weekes had 13 rebounds and Alade 10 while Weekes also had four assists and Alade had two blocks. Dowell had two steals.
Nicholas Gehlen netted 26 points for Algoma while Brandon Dwyer had 15 and Maxime Bellony and Daniel Humphrey had 10 apiece. Bellony also had 10 rebounds and Gehlen had two steals.
The Gryphs finish fourth in the West Division at 10-12. That’s good for 12th overall, the final playoff spot.
Carleton Ravens (21-1), Ottawa Gee-Gees (18-4), Lakehead Thunderwolves (17-5) and Western Mustangs (16-6) get byes in the first round of the playoffs. Each of the teams that were first-place finishers in their division and the second-place team with the best record get to sit out the opening round of post-season play.
Participating in the opening round are to be the Ryerson Rams (16-6), Laurentian Voyageurs (16-6), Queen’s Gaels (14-8), Brock Badgers (12-10), McMaster Marauders (12-10), Laurier Golden Hawks (11-11), Windsor Lancers (11-11) and Guelph.
The Gryphs are to play the Rams at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre Wednesday at 6 p.m. The locals suffered a 91-85 loss to Ryerson at the GGAC Feb. 5 in a game they led by 16 points early in the fourth quarter.
The other first-round games Wednesday have Brock playing at McMaster, Laurier playing at Queen’s and Windsor playing at Laurentian.
First-round winners are to play quarter-final games on the road Saturday.
