
Gryphon hoops men leave Humber behind in fourth quarter
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons struck for 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away to a 10-point victory over the Humber College Hawks in OUA men’s basketball preseason play Wednesday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
That quarter allowed the Gryphs to extend a two-point lead at the end of the third quarter into the final 83-73 victory.
Guelph led the OCAA team 24-23 at the end of the first quarter, 42-40 at halftime and 62-60 at the end of the third quarter.
The Gryphs had five players hit double digits in scoring led by Emmanuel Ansah, Victor Nausedas and Felix Janusauskas with 13 points apiece. Dylan McFee had 11 and Dezayne Mingo had 10.
Marcus Clarke-Moore connected for a game-high 30 for Humber while Dwayne Lambert-Cadore followed with 12.
The Gryphs shot 38 per cent on field goals, including 29 per cent on three-pointers, and 74 per cent on free throws. They also scored 28 points in the paint, 18 on turnovers, 14 on second chances and 42 from their bench.
The Hawks shot 37 per cent on field goals, including 21 per cent on three-pointers, and 75 per cent on free throws. They also scored 30 points in the paint, 14 on turnovers, 11 on second chances and 22 from their bench.
Nausedas had nine rebounds and three assists for the Gryphs while Matthew Oliver also had three assists and Ansah had three steals.
Clarke-Moore had seven rebounds and three steals for Humber.
The Gryphs grabbed 44 rebounds and had three blocks and eight steals.
The Hawks grabbed 43 rebounds and had two blocks and 12 steals.
The Gryphs have won both of their preseason matches, both against OCAA opponents. They’re to host the St. Francis Xavier X-Men Sunday at 1 p.m. and the Mount Royal Cougars next Thursday at 7 p.m..
The Gryphs are to open their regular season Nov. 4 against the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay.
