Gryphon hoops men nip Nipissing

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons made it two wins in a row as they edged the Nipissing Lakers 81-80 in OUA men’s basketball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Each team had eight-point leads during the game, but neither could take control.

Banky Alade hit a jumper with 1:47 to go to put the Gryphs ahead and complete the scoring in the game as the remainder of the match featured four misses by Nipissing – two three-point attempts and two jumpers – while the Gryphs never took a shot during the time.

The game was a see-saw affair with Nipissing leading 26-21 at the end of the first quarter and 44-43 at halftime while the hosts took a 62-60 lead by the end of the third quarter.

The Gryphs shot 46 per cent from the floor, 19 per cent on three-pointers and 69 per cent on free throws while the Lakers shot 37 per cent from the floor, 29 per cent from outside the arc and 76 per cent from the line.

Guelph out-rebounded Nipissing 44-29, but also turned the ball over seven more times than the Lakers and Nipissing responded with 19 points off those turnovers while Guelph had seven.

Alade finished the game with 22 points while Tommy Yanchus had 15.

Marcus Lewis had a game-high 28 for Nipissing while Justin Hill had 14, Marvin Ngonadi 12 and Shandon Ashitei 10.

The Gryphs improve to 2-5 while Nipissing falls to 1-4. The Gryphs are to play the Laurentian Voyageurs (4-1) at the GGAC Sunday at 3 p.m.
