Gryphon hoops men nipped by Badgers

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their second consecutive loss at home as they were edged 101-100 by the Brock Badgers 77-71 in OUA men’s basketball play at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre Wednesday night.

The game was a see-saw battle throughout with the Gryphs leading 25-22 at the end of the first quarter, 44-42 at halftime and 73-70 at the end of the third quarter.

However, the Badgers started a streak of nine consecutive points with the final basket of the third quarter. While the Gryphs did manage to catch up with just over six minutes to play, they never led again.

Malcolm Glanville’s three-pointer with two seconds to go cut the gap to the final one-point margin. After a second consecutive missed free throw by the Badgers awarded on a foul on the throw-in, Glanville grabbed the rebound. His desperation court-long throw hit the backboard, but wouldn’t drop for the winning bucket.

Glanville led the Gryphs with 39 points while Tommy Yanchus had 26 and Banky Alade 11. Alade hauled down 17 rebounds while Aaron Nugent had three assists and Yanchus had two steals.

All five starters hit double figures in scoring for Brock as Tyler Brown had 22 points, Cassidy Ryan 21, Johneil Simpson 16, Michael Vos Otin 15 and Daniel Cayer 11. Cayer grabbed 14 rebounds, Brown had five assists and Vos Otin and Simpson each had four steals.

The win leaves the Gryphs tied for fourth in the West Division at 6-9. Brock remains is tied for first at 10-5.

The Gryphs are to play the other division leader, the Western Mustangs (10-4), at Western’s Alumni Hall Saturday at 8 p.m. in their first of five consecutive road games. Next game at the GGAC for the Gryphs is set for Feb. 8 against the Windsor Lancers (5-10).
