Gryphon hoops men nipped by Nipissing
NORTH BAY – The Nipissing Lakers scored nine consecutive points in just over a minute and a half in the final two and a half minutes of the game to edge the Guelph Gryphons 82-80 in OUA men’s basketball play Friday night at Nipissing’s Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre.
The Gryphs had fallen behind early, but fought back to pull even in the second half. The teams traded baskets throughout most of the fourth quarter until the Gryphs grabbed a five-point lead with 2:13 to go.
However, the Lakers added their nine straight points and allowed the Gryphs to score just a pair of free throws in the final minute. The Gryphs missed four three-pointers and two jumpers in the final quarter.
Nipissing led 33-18 at the end of the first quarter, 42-34 at halftime and the teams were tied 59-59 at the end of the third quarter.
Rasheed Weekes led the Gryphs with 20 points while Kieran Naus had 17 and Malcolm Glanville added 16. Glanville also had eight rebounds and three assists while Naus had three steals.
Quintin Ashitei connected for a game-high 31 points for Nipissing while Shandon Ashitei and Girece Kazumba each had 13 and Justin Shaver netted 12. Shaver had six rebounds and seven assists.
The Gryphs are fourth in the West Division at 7-10 while Nipissing is fifth in the East Division at 5-12.
The Gryphs are to battle the seventh-ranked Laurentian Voyageurs (third in the East Division at 12-5) Saturday in Sudbury at Laurentian’s Ben F. Avery Gymnasium starting at 8 6 p.m.
