Gryphon hoops men pull away in final 20 seconds

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons grabbed a 14-point lead in the opening half, but had to rally in the final 20 seconds of the match to down the Waterloo Warriors 65-59 in OUA men’s basketball play Thursday afternoon at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Centre.

The Gryphs turned an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter into a 31-17 advantage at halftime, but Waterloo cut the margin to three points at 44-41 by the end of the third quarter.

The teams battled back and forth in the fourth quarter with Nedim Hodzic hitting a jumper and adding a free throw to put the Warriors ahead 59-58 with 23 seconds to go.

The Gryphs regained the lead six seconds later as Tommy Yanchus hit a pair of free throws and Guelph’s Rasheed Weekes added two more free throws with six seconds to after he was fouled following a steal. He also drained a jump shot at the buzzer and added a free throw awarded when he was fouled shooting the buzzer-beater.

Yanchus finished as the only Gryphon in double figures in scoring as he had 21 points. Malcolm Glanville and Weekes each had nine and Banky Alade had eight. Alade and J.L. Nwosu each had 11 rebounds while Glanville had three steals and Alade had two blocks.

Hodzic connected for 24 points for Waterloo and Petrov had 12 and Justin Malnerich added 11. Hodzic grabbed 13 rebounds and David Ramon Prados had three steals and Cameron Penner blocked two shots.

The win was the third in a row for the Gryphs and moves them into fourth place in the West Division at 6-7. Waterloo’s tied for seventh at 3-10.

The Gryphs are to host the fifth-place McMaster Marauders (5-7) Friday at 8 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
