Gryphon hoops men pull away in final quarter to top Mount Royal

CALGARY – The Guelph Gryphons left their finest shooting of the game until the fourth quarter as they grabbed a 102-91 victory over the Mount Royal Cougars of Calgary in Calgary Cup university men’s preseason basketball play Thursday.

The Gryphs shot 53 per cent on field-goal attempts in the final quarter to pull away for the win. They had led at the end of each quarter as the Gryphs were up 26-24 at the end of the first quarter, 51-48 at halftime and 75-72 after the third quarter.

A quick start to the final quarter gave the Gryphs a 10-point lead (86-76) with 6:51 to go and Mount Royal couldn’t get closer than four points the rest of the way. Guelph kept grip on the win by scoring the final seven points of the game.

Malcolm Glanville led the Gryphs with 24 points while Tommy Yanchus had 23 and Keenan Dowell and Viktor Nausedas each collected 12. Dowell grabbed 12 rebounds and he and Glanville each had four steals.

Dylan Lutes led Mount Royal with 14 points while Jaskaran Singh had 12, Adam Pahl and Nate Petrone each had 11 and Nick Tancon added 10. Tancon also had 13 rebounds.

The Gryphs are to play the UBC Thunderbirds Friday at 5 p.m. in their next outing in the tournament.
