Gryphon hoops men silenced by seventh-ranked Laurentian
SUDBURY – The Guelph Gryphons were limited to 31 points in the second half as they were downed 87-65 by the seventh-ranked Laurentian Voyageurs in OUA men’s basketball play Saturday night at Laurentian’s Ben Avery Gym.
Laurentian outscored Guelph 51-31 in the second half and the 65 points was the lowest single-game output by the Gryphs this season.
The Gryphs led 20-18 at the end of the first quarter before Laurentian eked ahead 36-34 by halftime. That lead for the Voyageurs grew to 63-48 by the end of the third quarter.
Viktor Nausedas led the Gryphs with 14 points off the bench while Malcolm Glanville added 10. J.L. Nwosu had seven rebounds and three steals while Aaron Nugent had three assists.
Kadre Gray collected 23 points for Laurentian and was followed by Joseph Hlady with 13, Sam Ivey with 11 and Gaetan Chamand with 10. Ivey had eight rebounds while Gray had nine assists, Haroun Mohamed had three steals and Chamand had two blocks.
The loss drops the Gryphs to 7-11 while Laurentian improves to 13-5. Western Mustangs lead the West Division at 13-6 and are the only team with a record above .500 in the division. The Laurier Golden Hawks are second at 9-10 and are followed by the Windsor Lancers at 8-10, Gryphs, Waterloo Warriors at 5-13 and Algoma Thunderbirds at 2-16.
Top three in each of the three divisions and the three teams with the next-best records regardless of their division qualify for the playoffs. The way the divisions are this season, it’s likely that each of the three divisions will place four teams in the playoffs. Algoma is out of playoff contention while the Gryphs hold the tiebreaker over both Laurier and Waterloo, but Windsor holds the tiebreaker over the Gryphs.
The Gryphs have four games to go. They’re to host the ninth-ranked Ryerson Rams (12-6) Wednesday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre Wednesday at 8 p.m., Toronto Varsity Blues (4-14) at the GGAC Saturday at 3 p.m. and Algoma at Sault Ste. Marie Feb. 14 and 15 with 8 p.m. game times both days.
