
Gryphon hoops men squeeze out win over Waterloo
GUELPH – Well, it’s a win for the Guelph Gryphons and is worth the same in the OUA men’s basketball standings as their victory by 45 points over the same opponent less than 24 hours earlier.
Rasheed Weekes hit a free throw with seven seconds to play to give the Gryphs a 64-63 victory the Waterloo Warriors Saturday afternoon at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Weekes had been fouled putting in the tying layup.

The Gryphs had defeated the winless Warriors 94-50 in Waterloo Friday night.
Saturday, the Warriors were a stubborn bunch who wouldn’t fold early. While the host Gryphs led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter, Waterloo rallied for a 33-30 lead at halftime. The Gryphs were back ahead 46-45 at the end of the third quarter.
Guelph was up by five points twice in the final quarter, but couldn’t put the Warriors away. Waterloo claimed its largest lead of the quarter, two points, with 15 seconds to play, but they couldn’t hold off the Gryphs.
Weekes led all scorers with 21 points while Dezayne Mingo had 16 for the hosts. Weekes also pulled down 12 rebounds while Mingo had eight. Emmanuel Ansah had four assists while Khalid Ismail had two steals.
Cristian Craciun connected for 15 points for Waterloo while Kanayo Nnadi had 13 and Stefan Djukic netted 11. Ethan Andrew had six rebounds while Raf Llorin had three assists and Craciun had two blocks.
The Gryphs shot 36 percent on field goals, 19 percent (6-of-32) on three-pointers and 62 percent on free throws. They also collected 30 points from the pain, 12 off turnovers, nine on second chances and 32 from their bench.
Waterloo shot 40 percent on field goals, 30 percent on three-pointers and 70 percent on free throws. The Warriors also had 36 points from the pain, eight off turnovers, two on second chances and 19 from their bench.
The Gryphs are fourth in the West Division at 5-9 while Waterloo is sixth at 0-14. Guelph is also 12th in the overall league standings and the top 12 qualify for the playoffs.
Next up for the Gryphs is a match against the Laurentian Voyageurs (15th overall at 2-11) Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the GGAC. They’re also to host the Nipissing Lakers (13th at 4-10) next Sunday at 3 p.m. and the Queen’s Gaels (second at 12-1) Feb. 3 at 8 p.m.
