Gryphon hoops men start hot, but cool off in loss to Western
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons got off to a hot start, but couldn’t maintain it as they fell 89-78 to the Western Mustangs in OUA men’s basketball play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
The Gryphs were ahead 12-5 after two and a half minutes of play with all their points coming off three-pointers. They would hit eight more in the game, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Mustangs at bay.
Guelph led 24-19 at the end of the first quarter while the Mustangs grabbed a 42-41 lead by halftime and they extended it to 67-58 by the end of the third quarter.
Western shot 45 percent from the floor, 48 percent on three-pointers and 69 percent on free throws while the Gryphs shot 42 per cent from the floor, 40 percent from long range and 75 percent on foul shots.
Tommy Yanchus hit five three-pointers and finished with 25 points while Keenan Dowell had 17 points, Malcolm Glanville 11 and Rasheed Weekes 10. Weekes hauled down 16 rebounds while Glanville had seven assists, Dowell and Weekes each had two steals and Dowell and Yanchus each had a block.
All five starters for Western finished in double digits in scoring as Omar Shiddo had 24 points, Julian Walker had 18, Aaron Tennant 16, Eriq Jenkins 15 and Nikola Farkic 12. Walker had 10 rebounds while Farkic had 14 assists and eight steals. Farkic and Walker each had a block.
The Gryphs reach the end of the 2019 segment of their league schedule tied for fourth in the West Division at 3-7. Western leads the division at 10-2.
Next up for the Gryphs is the Olga Hrycak Classic exhibition tournament at Montreal Dec. 27 to 29 where they’re to play the UQAM Citadins (2-3 in Quebec conference play), 11th-ranked Bishop’s Gaiters (2-3) and 12th-ranked McGill Redmen (5-1).
The Gryphs are to return to league play Jan. 8 when they’re to tangle with the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (sixth in the East at 0-10) at Oshawa.
