
Gryphon hoops men top Sheridan in preseason opener
OAKVILLE – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA men’s basketball preseason with a 79-68 victory over the Sheridan College Bruins at Sheridan Saturday night.
Emmanuel Ansah led the Gryphs with 19 points while Khalid Ismail had 18.
Ansah is one of three transfer students the Gryphs have this season and one of 10 new additions to the team’s roster. The 6-foot-6 guard/forward from Mississauga joins the Gryphs after three seasons with the New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds of Hobbs, NM.
The other transfers are 6-foot-4 guard/forward Dylan McFee from Aurora who comes to Guelph after a season with Simon Fraser and 6-foot-5 guard Simon Kayembe from Toronto who joins the Gryphs after a season with the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
The seven rookies are 6-foot-4 guard Dezayne Mingo from Hamilton, 6-foot-6 forward Eric Armstrong from New Hamburg, 6-foot-7 forward/centre Finn Burley from Newmarket, 6-foot-9 forward Jack Torry from Toronto, 6-foot guard Tailon Crawford from Brampton, 6-foot-3 guard Lucas Cino from Grimsby and 6-foot-5 guard Ismail Hassan from Milton.
Returnees include fifth-year guards Keenan Dowell and Rashad Weekes, fourth-year guard Ismail, third-year guards Jacob Edwards and Carl Veltman, third-year guard/forward Felix Janusauskas, third-year forward Viktoras Nausedas, second-year guards Jalen Mason and Cameron Powell, second-year point guard Mathew Oliver and redshirt forward Hadi El-Miari.
Next preseason game for the Gryphs is slated for Wednesday when they’re to host the Humber College Hawks at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Gryphs are to host two more preseason matches – Oct. 9 against the St. Francis Xavier V-Men and Oct. 13 against the Mount Royal Cougars – before opening their regular season Nov. 4 against the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Thunder Bay.
Home opener is set for Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
