Gryphon hoops men topped by Dinos in Calgary Cup
CALGARY – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a 75-68 loss to the host Calgary Dinos to complete play in the Calgary Cup preseason men’s basketball play Saturday.
Calgary shot ahead in the third quarter on their way to the win. The Dinos led 20-14 at the end of the first quarter and the teams were tied 35-35 at halftime before Calgary carried a slim 51-50 lead into the fourth quarter.
Tommy Yanchus led the Gryphs with a game-high 23 points while Keenan Dowell and J.L. Nwosu netted 11 apiece. Nwosu and Viktor Nausedas each grabbed eight rebounds while Dowell had five assists, three blocks and two steals while Nausedas also had two steals.
Brett Layton gathered 18 points for Calgary while Noah Wharton and Mason Foreman had 13 apiece and Max Eisele had 12. Layton hauled down 18 rebounds and Foreman had 15 while Layton also had two blocks.
The Gryphs had a win and two losses in the tournament to leave their overall record at 3-2.
The Guelph squad is to host the Juniata College Eagles of Huntingdon, Pa., Friday at 7 p.m. and the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats of Marion, Ind., Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Juniata is an NCAA Division III school and Indiana Wesleyan competes in the NAIA.
The Gryphs are to open their OUA regular season Nov. 1 with a 1 p.m. game in Kingston against the Queen’s Gaels.
