Gryphon hoops men upend fourth-ranked Queen’s Gaels

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons collected their fifth consecutive win and fourth in a row at home Friday night when they downed the Queen’s Gaels 94-84 in OUA men’s basketball play at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

It was the Gryphons’ first win over a team with a winning record this season. The Gaels entered the game ranked fourth in the country at 14-2.

The Gryphs pulled away in the second half for the win. They led 24-21 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 48-47 at halftime. The hosts responded in the third quarter to carry a 74-66 lead into the final quarter.

Keenan Dowell led the Gryphs with 20 points while five of his teammates also hit double digits in the match as Dylan McFee had 19, Rasheed Weekes 16, Dezayne Mingo 14, Khalid Ismail 12 and Viktor Nausedas 10.

Weekes had nine rebounds while Mingo had five assists and Dowell had three steals.

Gianni Itegeli had 21 points for Queen’s while Scott Jenkins added 17 and Connor Keefe had 12. Michael Kelvin hauled down 12 rebounds and had two steals while Itegeli had four assists.

The Gryphs shot 46 percent on field goals, 35 percent on three-pointers and 75 percent on free throws and also netted 30 points in the paint, 25 off turnovers and seven on second chances. They also received 34 from their bench.

Queen’s shot 49 percent on field goals, 37 percent on three-pointers and 48 percent on free throws and also netted 34 points in the paint, eight off turnovers and 14 on second chances. They also received 44 from their bench.

The win leaves the Gryphs third in the West Division and 11th overall at 8-9. Top 12 overall qualify for the playoffs.

There’s a logjam at the top of the standings as Queen’s, Lakehead Thunderwolves and Brock Badgers are all at 14-3 and the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens are both at 14-4.

The Gryphs are to play the Badgers at Brock Saturday at 8 p.m.
