Gryphon hoops women battle back for win

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons rebounded from a 16-point deficit to keep the Nipissing Lakers winless in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

The Gryphs trailed 41-25 early in the third quarter, but came back for a 75-65 victory. The rally included a 15-2 run.

Nipissing led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter, 36-23 at halftime and 48-47 at the end of the third quarter.

The Gryphs took advantage of foul calls on the Lakers as Guelph scored 24 points on free throws, 15 more than Nipissing. The Lakers were called for 29 fouls, the Gryphs 15.

Burke Bechard led the Gryphs with 21 points while Sarah Holmes had 18 and Ivana Vujadinovic added 17.

Angeline Campbell connected for 21 points for Nipissing while Michaela Branker collected 14 and Alexe Galipeau-Wilson contributed 12.

Guelph shot 33 per cent from the floor, 25 per cent from three-point territory and 69 per cent on free throws. Nipissing shot 29 per cent from the floor, 25 per cent from beyond the arc and 60 per cent from the line.

The win lifts the Gryphs to 4-3 while the loss was the fifth in as many outings for Nipissing.

The Gryphs are to host the Laurentian Voyageurs (1-4) Sunday at 1 p.m. at the GGAC.
