Gryphon hoops women beat Dalhousie to start preseason

HALIFAX – The Guelph Gryphons opened their university women’s basketball preseason with a 79-65 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers Friday at the Lawtons Centennial Tournament.

The Gryphs built an early lead and withstood a third-quarter comeback by Dalhousie. Guelph was up 21-17 at the end of the first quarter, 44-28 at halftime and 57-51 at the end of the third quarter.

Sarah Holmes led the Gryphs with 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals while Ivana Vujadinovic had 13 points and five rebounds, Ashley Wheeler and Julia Kakonis each had 11 points and five rebounds. Burke Bechard collected 10 points and six steals. Modupe Okeowo had seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks and Skyla Minaker had six rebounds and five steals.

Sophie Gaube had 15 points for Dalhousie and Michele Tchiakoua had 11 points and Robertha Charles grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Gryphs are to play the Windsor Lancers at the tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. and the St. Mary’s Huskies Sunday at 11 a.m.
