Gryphon hoops women climb back to top of division

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons rebounded from their pair of losses in Ottawa last weekend with a 54-38 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Complex.

The win also allowed the Gryphs to claim sole possession of first place in the West Division with a 10-3 record. Waterloo’s second at 9-4.

The Gryphs pulled away in the fourth quarter when they limited their hosts to a pair of points. The Gryphs led 16-13 at the end of the opening quarter before the teams scored seven points apiece in the second quarter. Guelph extended its lead to 41-36 by the end of the third quarter.

Guelph shot 26 percent on field goals, 21 percent on three-pointers and 69 percent on free throws and also collected 15 points on turnovers, six on second chances and 11 from the bench. They also had seven blocks and 10 steals.

Waterloo shot 19 percent on field goals, 25 percent on three-pointers and 70 percent on free throws and also collected two points on turnovers, seven on second chances and six from the bench. The Warriors also had three blocks and five steals.

MacKeely Shantz led the Gryphs with 17 points and seven rebounds while Renee Armstrong had 14 points and seven rebounds. Lucy Tesseyman had nine rebounds while Julia Colavecchia had two blocks and three steals.

Vanessa Hughes had 11 points for Waterloo while Kaitlyn Overeem added 10. Maddy Adams hauled down 12 rebounds while Hughes had three steals.

The teams are to play again Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Game time is 1 p.m.
