Gryphon hoops women downed by No. 3 McMaster

HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons, already assured of a playoff berth, suffered a 91-72 loss to the third-ranked McMaster Marauders in OUA women’s basketball play Wednesday night at McMaster’s Burridge Gymnasium.

The Gryphs never led in the game as McMaster jumped into an early 10-2 lead and never led the lead out of their hands. The Marauders led 25-16 at the end of the first quarter, 44-32 at halftime and 65-55 at the end of the third quarter.

Burke Bechard led the Gryphs with 17 points while Modupe Okeowo had 14, Skyla Minaker 13 and Hanna Pryce 10. Sarah Holmes grabbed 12 rebounds while Okeowo and Bechard each had 10. Minaker had eight assists , Bechard had three steals and Holmes and Okeowo each had two blocks.

Hilary Hanaka had 24 points for McMaster with Christina Buttenham getting 18, Sarah Gates 16 and Linnea Harper 14. Gates, Buttenham and Harper each had seven rebounds while Harper had six assists and Harper and Olivia Wilson each had three blocks. Buttenham had 10 steals.

The win clinched first in the West Division for McMaster as the Marauders are at 20-3. The Gryphs are tied for fifth with the Laurier Golden Hawks who have a game in hand. Guelph’s at 8-15 and Laurier’s at 8-14.

The Gryphs are to complete their regular season Saturday with a match against the Golden Hawks (8-14) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Game time is 1 p.m.

That game will decide the fifth- and sixth-place finishers in the division. Top six qualify for the playoffs.

The difference between the two finishing positions is that the fifth-place finisher will play the Brock Badgers (11-11) in the opening round while the sixth-place finisher will play the Windsor Lancers (15-7).

The Gryphs were 2-0 against Brock in the regular season and 1-1 against Windsor.
